Our story: from Unboxed Performance to Unboxed Automation
Unboxed is a small, fully remote AI strategy and automation team that helps New Zealand small business owners stop being the bottleneck in their own business.
We do three things, in this order:
Get clear. A strategy your whole team understands and wants to follow.
Get systemised. Simple automation and a website that pull their weight.
Get support. A trained Virtual Assistant who already knows your business, if there's work left over.
Most businesses jump straight to buying software or hiring more people. That's why it doesn't stick. We start with the plan, because technology only helps once everyone knows where the business is going.
Our Story
How we evolved to help business owners win back their time
Unboxed started from a simple belief: business owners should get to love what they do, and delegate what they don't.
In 2013 we made a deliberate choice to run as a fully remote team. Not for cost, but for freedom — so the people working with us could do great work from wherever life works best for them. We've lived that way ever since, and it taught us most of what we now teach our clients about systems, trust and handing work over well.
In April 2020, as the world suddenly went online, we started a free Facebook group to help business owners find smarter ways to use technology and build better work habits. The questions in that group kept coming back to the same thing: owners were drowning in work only they could do.
Then AI and automation changed what's possible for a small business. Work that used to need another hire can now run quietly in the background. So we brought it all together — strategy, simple technology and trained people — into the way we work today.

Most small business owners we meet built the business around themselves. Their knowledge, their standards, their hustle. It worked — until the team started making mistakes, the website got old, and every decision still had to come back through them.
That's usually not a tech problem. It's a strategy problem. We exist to fix it in the right order, starting with an AI strategy that fits your business, so the business finally runs on more than just you.
Meet Rob
Rob Robertson — founder
Rob is an entrepreneur, AI strategist, keynote speaker and business mentor who works fully remotely with clients in many countries. He travels a lot, and when in NZ is based at Stargate Forest, his retreat near Warkworth, Auckland, NZ. His work sits where technology meets people: helping owners trust who they are, trust their team, and trust their technology.
That last part matters. Most automation fails not because the software is wrong, but because nobody trusts it, understands it or wants to use it. Rob's focus on how technology and emotional fitness work together is why our systems actually get used.
Off the clock, Rob is a long-time tennis coach and a DJ and MC who knows how to shift the energy in a room — which, it turns out, is a useful skill when you're helping a team change how they work.

We've worked as a fully remote team for more than a decade. It's how we live what we teach: clear systems, clear handovers, and trust that the work gets done without anyone looking over a shoulder.
It's also why our Virtual Assistants are good at what they do. We employ, train and manage them ourselves. When one joins your business, they already know your tools and the automation we built for you. You get the output, not the overhead.
Our team uses the same kind of systems we set up for clients — task management, time tracking and simple automation — so we're never recommending something we don't use ourselves.
